Welcome to Fontys International Summer School (FISS),
the international learning community for active global citizens!
The aim’s of the Fontys International Summer school are:
- to foster awareness of global citizenship among people worldwide
- to reveal the global as part of everyday local life, whether in a small hamlet or large metropolis
- to offer people (access to) knowledge and know-how regarding global issues
- to foster respect for and the validation of diversity, placing emphasis on inclusive thinking
- to empower people to act as global citizens in or from their own local communities
Innovative
This summer school is less about teaching and much more about learning. Instead of an endless string of lectures, we offer you a structured, stimulating and rich environment where you can learn from lectures, movies, excursions, roleplays, simulations and group work in permanent and daily groups, as well as individual reflection.
Academic
The school is founded and funded by Fontys University of Applied Sciences. With 36,000 students, Fontys ranks among the biggest universities in The Netherlands. We are recognised and supervised by the Dutch Ministry of Education and are fully accredited by the NVAO (The Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders). With this we meet the nation’s educational standards, which are among the highest in the world.
Summer
The school is held 12 July – 1 August 2009, which is the height of our summertime when The Netherlands are at its best: lots of sunshine, not too much rain, 20 – 30 ºC (68 - 86 ºF). You’ll see the Dutch sipping their lattes on sidewalk cafes, roller-skating through the countryside, or enjoying outdoor music festivals. No worries, for sure you’ll get your share of it.
School
You’ll learn lots and you’ll earn 8 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). You’ll have to attend at least 80% of all learning activities, work (with supervision and intervision) on your personal academic portfolio and do a final presentation with your group during the working conference in the final week. Assessment of your learning outputs will also take place during the final week.
To be eligible for the Fontys International Summer School, you need to meet the following requirements:
